Breaking Obsidian in Minecraft

Obsidian can be broken with a Diamond Pickaxe or a Netherite Pickaxe. Using either of these items will break Obsidian down quickly and allow you to collect the blocks.

You can break Obsidian by using pickaxes made of other materials, but this will take longer, and also not drop Obsidian blocks once they’ve been completely broken.

As such, we recommend using a Diamond or Netherite Pickaxe for breaking Obsidian as it’s faster, and you can then re-use the blocks for something like a Nether Portal.
